Living Desert
First Day Hike at the Living Desert
On January 1st, come and experience the First Day Hike event at the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens State Park overlooking the city of Carlsbad. Witness over 40 different animal species and over 100 types of plants native to the Chihuahuan Desert as you hike a 1.3 mile trail that loops around the zoo, offering stunning views of Carlsbad, and the Permian Basin. Best of all, during this event everyone will be admitted into the zoo for FREE!!!

Maggie the Bear's 21st Birthday
Join us in celebrating Maggie the Bear's 21st birthday at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park on January 17th. Crafts and activities will be held in the visitors center starting at 10:00am. At noon, Maggie will receive her birthday present for visitors to witness. The visitor center activities will be free of charge, but standard entrance fees apply to enter the zoo.

Living Desert
Docent Training
Join a dedicated group of volunteers and become a vital part of the community by learning about the Chihuahuan Desert's ecology and formulating skills to convey that knowledge to the public. Training courses for docents will be held at the Living Desert's visitors center every Wednesday from February 4th through March 11th. Courses start at 9:00am and expected to last until 1:00pm and will be free of charge. If interested, call (575) 887-5516 to register.

Living Desert
New Mexico Boating Safety Course
Free, 8-hour class offered by New Mexico State Parks. There is no fee to take this class. Education is the key to becoming a better, more knowledgeable boater. In New Mexico, many boaters are required by law to complete a boating safety course and receive a boater education card. Everyone is eligible and encouraged to take the course and receive a card.
