Heron Lake State Park

Announcements

The following campgrounds are open year-round: Blanco, Ridge Rock, La Laja, and Piedra Cove. Willow campground will remain open through December 31. All developed campgrounds require a reservation.

Heron Lake State Park has received adequate snowfall for Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing. East Meadow Trail starts at the Visitor Center and is 2.5 miles one way or a 5 mile total length round-trip. $5.00 Day Use Fee or Annual Pass must be displayed.

Road Conditions: Access roads to Heron Lake State Park have been plowed. Roads remain snow packed and slippery. Caution should be used when driving in the area.

Ice fishing is open at Heron Lake State Park. Ice conditions were last checked on 2/2/2023. Currently there is 10” of good clear ice. Ice will be measured again and this message will be updated on 2/6/2023

Closures

Heron Lake is closed to the use of operation of all Off Highway Vehicles (OHV's). This includes but is not limited to Off Highway Motorcycles, Side-By Sides, Quad Runners, and Snowmobiles.

The stairway to the suspension bridge located at Rio Chama Trailhead is closed. Access to the Rio Chama can be gained using the BOR access road.

Rio Chama Trailhead and access to the Rio Chama Trail is closed due to construction in the area. Access to the Rio Chama River can be gained at the North El Vado Day Use Area.

The following campgrounds and primitive camping areas are closed for the season: Brushy Point, Island View, Salmon Run, Ponderosa, Little Oso, and Rincon.

Comfort Stations located at Willow, Blanco, and Island View campgrounds have been closed for the season. Vault toilets can be located at the Willow Boat Launch and across from site #44 Blanco Campground.

Water service to Willow and Blanco campgrounds has been temporarily closed due to an issue with the water system. Service will be restored as soon as possible. This will not affect the water quality.

Restrictions

Fireworks are prohibited in Heron Lake State Park.
    Posting Dates: 7/27/2021 - ongoing
Stage I Fire Restrictions: Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove is prohibited except in State Park developed camp and picnic grounds where grills and stoves are provided by the State Park.
