Heron Lake State Park

Announcements

All boat ramps are currently closed. Small vessels and paddle craft can be hand-launched from the shoreline. 9/6/2022 - ongoing
The following campgrounds are open year-round: Blanco, Ridge Rock, La Laja, and Piedra Cove. Willow campground will remain open through December 31. All developed campgrounds require a reservation. 9/19/2022 - 5/14/2023

Closures

Heron Lake is closed to the use of operation of all Off Highway Vehicles (OHV's). This includes but is not limited to Off Highway Motorcycles, Side-By Sides, Quad Runners, and Snowmobiles. 7/27/2021 - ongoing
The stairway to the suspension bridge located at Rio Chama Trailhead is closed. Access to the Rio Chama can be gained using the BOR access road. 8/22/2021 - ongoing
Rio Chama Trailhead and access to the Rio Chama Trail is closed due to construction in the area. Access to the Rio Chama River can be gained at the North El Vado Day Use Area. 12/20/2021 - ongoing
Due to low water levels we are unable to provide courtesy docks for boaters. 6/22/2022 - ongoing
The following boat ramps are closed due to low water conditions: Willow, Sierra Vista, La Laja and Primitive. Small vessels and paddle craft can be launched from the shoreline. 9/19/2022 - ongoing
The following campgrounds and primitive camping areas are closed for the season: Brushy Point, Island View, Salmon Run, Ponderosa, Little Oso, and Rincon. 9/19/2022 - 5/14/2023

Restrictions

Fireworks are prohibited in Heron Lake State Park. 7/27/2021 - ongoing
Stage I Fire Restrictions: Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove is prohibited except in State Park developed camp and picnic grounds where grills and stoves are provided by the State Park. 8/2/2022 - ongoing
The use of devices fueled solely by liquid petroleum or LPG fuels that can be turned on and off is allowed. Such devices can only be used in an area that is barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within three (3) feet of the device. Smoking is prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site/improved site, or while standing in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material. 8/2/2022 - ongoing
