Cimarron Canyon (575) 377-6271
Trail Closures-The Colin Neblett backcountry including Tolby and Maverick Trails are closed to all entry during deer fawning and elk calving May 15-July 31. Clear Creek Trail remains open May 15-July 31. The backcountry and ALL trails are closed during big game hunts as published in the NM Rules and Info Booklet. Licensed hunters and their hunting party are exempt from closures during their hunt/scouting period.

Clayton Lake & Dinosaur Trackways 575-374-8808
Clayton Lake State Park and Dinosaur Trackway has closed access to the boat ramp and is prohibiting the use of motorized boats due to declining water levels and related safety concerns. The lake remains open for non-motorized vessels, including canoes and kayaks. Motorized boat access will be restored once water levels improve and conditions allow for safe use of the boat ramp.

Due to ongoing construction to replace vault toilets at Clayton Lake State Park & Dinosaur Trackways, the vault toilet facilities located at the dinosaur parking lot, Camp Cove, the South Loop, and the Rock Gardens will be closed. The comfort station, as well as the double vault toilets at North Point and along the Nature Trail, will remain open for visitor use. Please exercise caution and be aware of construction activity while visiting the park.

State Highway 112 across El Vado Dam will be closed from May 27 to September 4, 2026, due to the Bureau of Reclamation’s Dam Renovation Project. Updated Route Information: All visitors must first travel to Tierra Amarilla, NM. From there, take Highway 112 to reach El Vado Lake State Park. Travelers coming from Albuquerque should use Highway 84 to reach Tierra Amarilla. We appreciate your patience during this temporary closure. Contact Park office 575-588-7247

Elephant Butte Lake (575) 744-5923
Please be advised that the South Monticello and Rock Canyon boat ramps are currently closed due to low water levels. We anticipate reopening when water levels increase, and conditions allow.

Due to the inherent hazards posed by low water levels, the Cliffs Area of the state park will remain closed indefinitely.

All boat ramps (and courtesy docks) at Heron Lake State Park are currently unavailable for boaters due to extremely low lake levels. These ramps and docks will remain unavailable until lake levels improve. Those visitors planning to launch watercraft should call the park office to check for conditions prior to arriving. Rio Chama Trailhead and access to the Rio Chama Trail is closed due to construction in the area. Access to the Rio Chama River can be gained at the North El Vado Day Use Area.

Heron Lake is closed to the use of operation of all Off Highway Vehicles (OHV's). This includes but is not limited to Off Highway Motorcycles, Side-By Sides, Quad Runners, and Snowmobiles.

Construction Alert: Temporary Restroom Closures at Leasburg Dam State Park. Please be advised that the main comfort station and dump station at Leasburg Dam State Park will be closed for improvements starting Thursday, February 26th, through August 2026. During this time, portable restrooms and handwashing stations will be available on-site. The entrance road is under construction, and we ask that you follow the detours signs to enter the park. We apologize for this inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we upgrade our facilities.

"The Shower House is now on limited operation hours (Closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) Open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 8:00 AM to 4: 00 PM if water production from the natural spring allows. Further water system shutdowns may be implemented (Lake Alice Campground) depending on production capabilities of the existing system."

Water Issues and closures of water use - The park is currently dealing with some water pressure issues that have reduced water availability in the park. Water may be limited or shut down at times including the comfort station. The showers will remain closed pending repairs/remedies. We are working with industry professionals to identify and remedy the issue. We expect these issues for the next few weeks. Please check back for updates.
