State Park Closures

Bottomless Lake (575) 988-3638
Stage II Fire Restrictions: Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove is prohibited. The use of devices fueled solely by liquid petroleum or LPG fuels that can be turned on and off is allowed. Such devices can only be used in an area that is barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within three (3) feet of the device. Smoking is prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle or building.

Trail Closures-The Colin Neblett backcountry including Tolby and Maverick Trails are closed to all entry during deer fawning and elk calving May 15-July 31. Clear Creek Trail remains open May 15-July 31. The backcountry and ALL trails are closed during big game hunts as published in the NM Rules and Info Booklet. Licensed hunters and their hunting party are exempt from closures during their hunt/scouting period.

Lakeview Trail from US Highway 64 to the Visitor Center will be close on Sunday, July 7th, 2024 due to the decommission of the lagoons. It is unknown when the trail will reopen.

Moreno Day Use and Six Mile Day Use areas are subject to seasonal closures due winter weather. Closures will last until staff has remove snow and made areas accessible.

A large-scale renovation project of El Vado Dam has forced the closure of the Day Use Area at El Vado Dam. Please stay clear of all construction areas. As a result of the ongoing repair work at the Dam, extremely low lake levels have left too little lake surface to allow for motorboat operation. Also, angling, ice fishing, and swimming opportunities are all but nonexistent.

With the onset of winter temperatures, the comfort station will be winterized and closed from October 15, 2024 until mid-May 2025.

The following camping and recreation areas will be closed for the winter season starting October 1, 2024 (scheduled to reopen May 1, 2025): Pinon Beach, Shale Point, South Point, Sands Cove, The Peninsula, and North El Vado.

Fenton Lake is currently closed to ice fishing. Recent warm weather and deteriorating ice conditions have made the lake surface unsafe for ice fishing.

Heron Lake is closed to the use of operation of all Off Highway Vehicles (OHV's). This includes but is not limited to Off Highway Motorcycles, Side-By Sides, Quad Runners, and Snowmobiles.

Rio Chama Trailhead and access to the Rio Chama Trail is closed due to construction in the area. Access to the Rio Chama River can be gained at the North El Vado Day Use Area.

Seasonal closure of the Main Camping Loop, all group shelters, and all first-come, first-serve sites from November 1, 2024, through April 30, 2025, depending on weather conditions. The RV Loop will remain open, depending on weather conditions. Seasonal closure of the Lodge from October 31, 2024, through April 30, 2025. Seasonal availability of the Lodge is from May 1 through October 31 each year.
