General Alert for Cimarron: Cimarron Canyon is undergoing improvements and upgrades as part of New Mexico State Parks Statewide – Outdoor Recreation Restroom Improvement Project. Construction efforts will impact both day use areas and campgrounds. Be sure to check for and review park alerts and notifications prior to your visit. For the affected areas, we anticipate noise and other construction-related impacts for the duration of these construction activities. Please adhere to all signage and electronic alerts for your safety. For up-to-date information, please call the park at 505-414-9840. Blackjack Tent Camping area will be closed on September 7th, 2026 and will reopen on May 1st, 2027

Maverick Campground/ Gravel pit lakes will be closed on September 15th, 2026. The campground will reopen on March 1st 2027.

Tolby Campground will remain open during construction with limited sites that will be walkup up or first come first serve sites. There may be short, partial closure for the demo of the comfort stations. Check back for more updates.

Trail Closures-The Colin Neblett backcountry including Tolby and Maverick Trails are closed to all entry during deer fawning and elk calving May 15-July 31. Clear Creek Trail remains open May 15-July 31. The backcountry and ALL trails are closed during big game hunts as published in the NM Rules and Info Booklet. Licensed hunters and their hunting party are exempt from closures during their hunt/scouting period.

Clayton Lake & Dinosaur Trackways 575-374-8808
Clayton Lake State Park and Dinosaur Trackway has closed access to the boat ramp and is prohibiting the use of motorized boats due to declining water levels and related safety concerns. The lake remains open for non-motorized vessels, including canoes and kayaks. Motorized boat access will be restored once water levels improve and conditions allow for safe use of the boat ramp.

Due to ongoing construction to replace vault toilets at Clayton Lake State Park & Dinosaur Trackways, the vault toilet facilities located at the dinosaur parking lot, Camp Cove, the South Loop, and the Rock Gardens will be closed. The comfort station, as well as the double vault toilets at North Point and along the Nature Trail, will remain open for visitor use. Please exercise caution and be aware of construction activity while visiting the park.

Please be advised that all boat ramps in the park are closed due to low water levels. We anticipate reopening when water levels increase, and conditions allow. All launching and retrieving of vessels is at the operators own risk.

Due to the inherent hazards posed by low water levels, the Cliffs Area of the state park will remain closed indefinitely.

Heron Lake (575) 588-7470
All boat ramps (and courtesy docks) at Heron Lake State Park are currently unavailable for boaters due to extremely low lake levels. These ramps and docks will remain unavailable until lake levels improve. Those visitors planning to launch watercraft should call the park office to check for conditions prior to arriving. Rio Chama Trailhead and access to the Rio Chama Trail is closed due to construction in the area. Access to the Rio Chama River can be gained at the North El Vado Day Use Area.

Heron Lake is closed to the use of operation of all Off Highway Vehicles (OHV's). This includes but is not limited to Off Highway Motorcycles, Side-By Sides, Quad Runners, and Snowmobiles.

Mesilla Valley Bosque Park is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Bert Clancy campground and parking will be closed for construction from Sundays at 4pm through Fridays at 10am. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, it is for the safety of visitors. These campground improvements will be open soon.
